This is such beautiful fabric, made at the Konni Dyeing and Weaving Studio, a traditional textile workshop located in Ojiya City, Niigata Prefecture, Japan. The studio specializes in indigo dyeing (aizome) using traditional natural lye fermentation methods and is recognised for its unique weaving techniques. Their products include shirushi-banten (traditional work coats for merchants and artisans), noren (doorway curtains), and tenugui (hand towels). The techniques used at Konni were part of the Folk Crafts movement(Mingei movement) in the mid-20th century, which sought to preserve traditional Japanese crafts.
This fabric is made using kusaki-zome (tree and plants dyeing) techniques and features a crysanthemum design which signifies the chrysanthemum's deep cultural connection to royalty, particularly in Japan where it symbolises the Emperor and Imperial Family, used in the Imperial Crest and as the "Chrysanthemum Throne" name for the Emperor's position. These flowers are prized for their stunning, long-lasting blooms and significant symbolism.
The design is medium-large - we've added a pencil to show scale.
